As 2014 begins, set amazing GOALS! Do not make RESOLUTIONS!

Every December 31 and January 1, all we hear and see is tons and tons and tons of information about your NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTION!  What is it?  How to keep to it?  What it should be and what it could be.  Let’s be real for just a minute.  How many times doe we make them and KEEP THEM ALL YEAR?  I know right?  It is a rare thing.

To us resolutions are sort of like diets.  Neither work!  Trust me we know!  And if we get really honest, so do you. I propose that for 2014, instead of making resolutions that we all know will fall by the wayside within a few months, weeks, days, or even hours for some, we instead focus on setting some realistic goals.  Not just whimsical and far out goals, but goals we can track and measure as the year goes on and that we can take and look back on Dec. 31, 2014 and see how we did and feel really good about the year and then some even better goals for 2015!

We are so excited about this goal setting that we have decided to turn it into a 365 day challenge for our followers on Facebook and radio listeners!  We have created a page called Committed to a Happy and Healthy 2014!  You can find it HERE.  Like the page and share with friends!  Our goal is to have 1 million happy healthy people in or community by December 31, 2014.

When you find this blog and the page, here is what we want you to do!  Grab a blank notebook and let’s get started! We are going to set some attainable goals that focus on all areas of life and work on them for a year! Think of the blank notebook as your empty canvas for 2014.  By December 31, it will be filled with AMAZING things!  And as the notebook fills with wonderful and amazing things, so will your life!  (not that we do not think our lives are wonderful and amazing now, but we always them to be even better each day than the day before!)  Here are the areas we are going to focus on all year!

1. OVERALL PHYSICAL HEALTH

This is about so many things and not just the one that tends to come to mind for many which is weight.  Being fit and healthy is about SO MUCH MORE than just a number on the scale.  Instead of saying that by Dec. 31, 2014 you want to be at a certain weight, make a goal like, “I WANT TO BE ABLE TO WALK A 5K”, or “I WANT TO BE ABLE TO PLAY WITH MY KIDS WITHOUT BEING OUT OF BREATH”, or “I WANT TO DO A TRIATHLON”, or “I WANT TO BE OFF MY BLOOD PRESSURE MEDS”.

It is very personal and will vary for each person.  Think on it and set a goal and write it in the inside cover of your blank notebook.  Then commit to doing 3 things a day to help you get to that goal.  We will help you with this also on the Facebook page as we go through the year!  I am a Certified Personal Trainer and my husband is a Personal Fitness Chef and we will be here for you!  Getting some type of physical activity in 3 times a week and eating well should be two things you strive for each day.  Remember, exercise does not have to be intense or take an hour and can always be done at home.  We will help you with this as we move forward this year!  Stay tuned for lots of tips and recipes and fun!

Have you written your goal in the front cover of your notebook?  GREAT!  Let’s move on to number two!

2. EMOTIONAL HEALTH  

This is critical to being healthy.  If we are not happy and in a great place emotionally, it ca truly effect our health.  Set a goal that involves you emotional health.  We will talk more later this month about the connection between stress and health and also weight issues.  For some people it will mean removing the negative and toxic people from your life, or reconciling with an old friend or family member, or spending more time with your kids and spouse.  It could be something as simple as putting off the housework for an hour and using that hour to take a nice hot bubble bath once a week! Again, this will be a very personal thing and will be different for us all, but think about and set your goal and write it in the inside cover of your notebook.  Try to make it something you can work on all year.  We will feature advice and tips from psychologists and therapists we trust all year-long on the Facebook page!

3. SPIRITUAL HEALTH

This is a really big one for me.  I always find that whenever I am in a good healthy place in my relationship with God, the rest of my world starts to fall into place, but whenever I am lacking in this area, other areas start to lack as well.  Set a personal goal that involves your spiritual growth and write it in the inside of your notebook.  Do you need to just spend more time in prayer?  Do you need to work on forgiveness (this is one of mine for sure)? Do you need to work more on attending worship services regularly?  Do you need to do a better job of helping your kids in their spiritual growth?  We are all in a different place and this too will vary for all, but set a goal that you can again work on all year. Each day we will offer a devotion on the Facebook page to motivate and inspire you!

4. FINANCES

Financial stress can really suck the happiness out of you very quickly.  Think about your current financial situation and then where you want it to be December 31.  Now, think realistically.  This does not mean setting your goal to win the lottery and be able to retire and move to Hawaii.  Set a real goal that is doable and personal to you.  It could be working towards a certain promotion within your company, or paying off a debt you owe, or not using credit cards, or saving $10 a month or even saving $1000 a month.  If we really sit down and look at our finances and spending, I guarantee we ALL have room for improvement and can think of a really good goal to work on all year.  I had a friend who set a goal to consistently for a year pay an extra $100 a month on the mortgage and also cut out one meal out per week.  It was incredible what this did for their finances by the end of that year and also how it changed what they owed on their home!  If you do not own a savings account, I suggest you open one.  Whether you are in a position to put $1 or $1000 a month into it, open it.

I also suggest giving something to charity.  It feels so good to give to others whether of your time or finances.  Nothing feels better than when Ben and I can offer our programs for free or give to our church or help a friend in need.  The more we give the more we seem to be blessed.  Write your financial goal in the front of your notebook.

5. PROFESSIONAL LIFE

Whether you are blessed enough to have a job and career you love, or hate your job and want a big change, there is always room to set goals for growth professionally.  I know I have a very long list of professional goals for 2014.  Are you wanting to finish up a degree that will get you that promotion?  Are you trying to advance to the next level within your company?  Do you own your own business and want to see it grow by a certain percentage this year?  Do you love your current job but just want to really commit to giving it more and doing your best?  Again, with this goal, it will be so different for us all so think of a goal, or two or three, and wrote them in your notebook!  We will share tips and advice all year on this topic as well on the Facebook page!

Now go to the BACK inside cover of your notebook and on the top of that last page in your notebook, write today’s date and one thing you are thankful for.  Try to do this each day and as we go along, you will see why we started at the BACK of the notebook and are working our way backwards!  It will be a huge blessing, especially when you are going through a rough time, to be able to look at all of the GOOD things in your life!

Now that you have your notebook all set up, you just need to LIKE our Facebook page and you are ready to start on the path to a happier and healthier you this year!  It does not matter if you join us January 1 or November 1, the year will end for us all on a really happy and healthy note!  If we get to 1 million LIKES by July 1, we are going to do an AMAZING special surprise giveaway for all of our followers!  We are so excited to see the results!

We are going to have a year filled with healthy and happy fun so spread the word, invite friends and family, create teams, and start seeing the changes in your life right away!
